I can choose to live in the past and to burn myself over and over again with the hot coals of the memories that it consists of. I can also choose to leave my past behind me and focus on the now and my goals for the future.
Let me tell you, it's okay not to forgive. It doesn't make you a bad person. Forgiveness comes once you heal and then it comes naturally without having been forced. It's also okay not to forget and not to allow the same things to be done to you that hurt you in the past.
What we need to realise though is that you can choose not to forget and still not move into the house of the past with all your baggage. I don't deny that you may have had a childhood from hell or a marriage that broke you or a job that stole your spirit. I deny none of that. But I ask you this now... how are you going to allow it to shape you, to shape your future, to shape your today?
You are not the product of your experiences. You are the product of your REACTION to your experiences. This is why two children who grew up in the same home can be so vastly different. It's not that they were treated differently. They responded differently.
It's never too late to decide to be the master or mistress of your own destiny. It's never too late to stop blaming the past for the way you feel today. It's never too late to take control of who you are and decide who you want to be. When you make that decision, the Universe responds accordingly. Your life is in your hands. You're not going to dodge all the bad but you can either use it to build a home in your misery or build a pathway out of it.
