The big changes
I know that death and taxes are the only guarantees in life but the only real constant throughout our lives is change. Change can be damn uncomfortable or it can be an exciting journey of discovery. It comes down to how you perceive it and what intrinsic beliefs you hold about it.
I'm sure you've all heard that story about boiling a frog. You know the one where if you put a live frog in a pot of boiling water it jumps out but if you put it in a pot of cold water and heat it slowly till it boils it just stays there as it becomes accustomed to the tiny changes in temperature?
Our lives are a lot like that. We experience small changes daily and we don't bat an eyelid but confront us (some of us, many of us) with a huge life change and we bolt for the door. Bearing in mind that we deal with constant small changes with absolutely no added stress, why is it that big changes frighten the life out of us?
Putting aside our beliefs and conditioning, I'd like to suggest that it's not the change that scares us as much as it is the fear of regret once we have made a decision we can't go back on. The whole frying pan into the fire thing is pretty scary. It's pretty scary to stay in the frying pan too though.
I'm all about big changes. I embrace them and I really enjoy the excitement of them. I'm a restless soul by nature. I do get that not everyone sees change the same way though.
Here's my suggestion... take ten minutes and think back on the really big changes you've experienced through life. The ones that involved no going back. The ones that involved fear of regret. Now look back at the changes you made that did result in regret. How many of those still bother you today? I think that regret fades, rather like grief. I think we're more resilient than we believe. And I know that no matter what we do, our journey always leads us to exactly where we want to be.
So if you're facing a terrifying decision right now, please relax and take a deep breath. If your life needs changing, then take that risk, weigh up your options, make yourself happy. This is your time and it's limited so make the decisions quickly and live the joy longer.
